Life Change To-Do Lists

by Laura Varela

Life changes – like getting married, divorced, having a child, or facing widowhood – require more than an emotional adjustment. They also require certain financial adjustments.

  • Have the money talk. Sit down with your significant other and set financial goals. Do you want to save for a new house? Have kids? Will you pool your assets or maintain separate checking or savings accounts?

  • Discuss credit. Exchange credit reports and see where you both stand. Focus on cleaning up any credit problems.

Board of Directors Election 2019 ... Your Chance to Make a Difference!

Elections for the 2019 Board of Directors will be here before you know it. Make sure to let your voice be heard by voting for the credit union leaders who will work for you.

To become even more involved, you can contribute your time and talents by running for one of three board positions. Any member in good standing who would like to be nominated for the positions available may send a letter of introduction (100 words or less) to: Nomination Committee, c/o LVECU, 3720 Hamilton Blvd., Allentown, PA 18103. The deadline for receiving letters is November 30, 2018. Ballots and biographies will be mailed (if necessary) to all members age 12 and over after the close of nominations.

By a resolution of the Board of Directors, incumbent directors will be automatically re-nominated if they wish to run. The Nominating Committee may nominate one additional person for each position. Anyone not nominated by the committee may have his/her name added to the ballot for any position by submitting a nominating petition with the signatures of 25 LVECU members. Petitions are available at the LVECU Main Office.

Nominees must be members in good standing as defined by the following criteria: all entrance fees have been paid, all loans with the Credit Union are current, and the Credit Union has suffered no losses as a result of a charge-off or discharge in bankruptcy of any loans or obligations.

Why Might Your Credit Score Be Different Than Your Spouse’s?

by Hugh Norton

Credit Report

Like many others, when my wife and I got married, we decided to intertwine our finances along with the rest of our lives. For most couples, opening joint bank accounts and buying a car or home together is the norm. However, even after decades of living together and leading similar financial lives, spouses may find out their credit scores are different.

There are two primary reasons that your credit scores could be different from someone else’s – spouse or not. Either the underlying information in your credit reports is different, or different credit-scoring models are creating the scores.

Anatomy of a Fake Check Scam

by Colleen Tressler, Consumer Education Specialist, FTC

Fake checks drive many types of scams – like those involving phony prize wins, fake jobs, mystery shoppers, online classified ad sales, and others.

In a fake check scam, a person you don’t know asks you to deposit a check – sometimes for several thousand dollars and usually for more than what you are owed – and wire some of the money back to that person. The scammers always have a good story to explain the overpayment – they’re stuck out of the country, they need you to cover taxes or fees, you need to buy supplies, or something else. But by the time your bank discovers you’ve deposited a bad check, the scammer already has the money you sent, and you’re stuck paying the rest of the check back to the bank.

The Federal Trade Commission receives tens of thousands of reports each year about fake checks. Over the last three years, the number of complaints has steadily increased, and so have the dollars lost.
