Summer Travel

It’s easy to get carried away when traveling, buying souvenirs, eating at restaurants and upgrading your flights and accommodations. But the last thing you want is to face a big bill when you get home.

Here are some tips for budgeting accordingly, no matter what type of vacation you’re planning.

  1. Be realistic about what you can afford. Set expectations for your travel budget that are feasible and attainable. While splurging on travel can be tempting, it will only create financial stress after your bags are unpacked.

  2. Start a dedicated travel fund. It’s easier to save when you have a specific destination and plan in mind. Think about where you want to go, research how much it costs and develop a consistent saving plan well in advance.

  3. Create a trip budget. Use this free web-based Travel Calculator to calculate the cost of gas, lodging, food and more. It’s also available as a free iPhone app on iTunes.

Get a one-ring call? Don’t call back.

by Michael Atleson, Acting Assistant Director, Division of Consumer & Business Education

A while back, we warned you about the “one ring” scam. That’s when you get a phone call from a number you don’t know, and the call stops after just one ring. The scammer is hoping you’ll call back, because it’s really an international toll number and will appear as a charge on your phone bill — with most of the money going to the scammer. Well, the scam is back with a vengeance, and the FCC just issued a new advisory about it. Read the FCC’s advisory for more detail, but the advice from both agencies remains the same if you get one of these calls:

  • Don’t call back

  • Always check your phone bill for suspicious or unusual charges

keep-your-phone-safeKeep Your Phone Secrets Secret

by Tracy Curtis

Smartphones have gone from novelty items to hubs for communication, entertainment, travel, research, banking, navigation, and capturing it all for posterity. If you’re a person whose daily functioning and secrets are tied to your phone, make sure that only you can access it.

The easiest way to secure your phone is to always keep it with you. Most people have conditioned themselves to regularly check their phone throughout the day. The ability to remotely track, lock, or erase phones using the Find My Device or Find My iPhone apps makes your phone less attractive to thieves and generally less dangerous to lose.

Remote access technology helps only if you’ve turned on those features and added a security measure to get beyond your lock screen. Most phones allow you to set a passcode, PIN, or pattern. High end phones might let you choose fingerprints, irises, voices, or faces for phone access. Security experts generally recommend using a complex password rather than any kind of biometric confirmation.
